The origins of Champion Health trace back to about 10 years ago, following a personal tragedy experienced by our founders. They were deeply affected by the loss of a loved one, which led them to frequently ponder whether the outcome could have been different—could something have been done to prevent or at least slow the progression of that health issue? It’s a question many of us find relatable.
A pivotal moment came a year later when Michael, our President, was dealing with his daughter reaching driving age. Their insurance company offered an app to monitor her driving habits, promoting safety and potential savings. The first report wasn’t great; it highlighted issues like sudden braking and following too closely, sparking necessary conversations about her driving behavior.
However, improvement was noticeable by the next report—a couple of months later—which showed significant positive changes, with three green check marks and two yellows. This experience demonstrated how tracking behavior could lead to positive changes.

The process involves designating $1,200 of an employee’s existing gross pay as a qualified Section 125 Pretax premium, similar to an employee’s contribution to their group medical or 401(k) plan. This arrangement results in the employee's money being used as pretax dollars for contributions while also having a post-tax claim payment made. As a result, there is an increase in the employee’s net take-home pay. On average this equals about $1,500.00 per year or $125.00 per month increase in take home pay.
To qualify for the monthly Champ Plan benefit of $1,010.00, the employee must engage in a qualifying medical activity at least once per month. This could involve choosing an item from a provided health services menu and completing the activity. You will notice a reduction in the employee’s payroll taxes on their paycheck, reflecting these adjustments. As demonstrated, the $47.80 saved on FICA taxes per employee per month ($573.60 annually) translates into a fixed net savings for the employer. For a company with 100 employees, this results in an annual increase of $57,360 to your bottom line.
